New Book Reveals How Faith Is Like a Covert Operation for the Bush Family

advertisement

THE WHOLE ARTICLE IS WORTH READING.

These social and political changes have posed distinct challenges for pols seeking to navigate the changes in American religious life and the successes of a culture of religious pluralism. This was particularly so for the patrician Bush family, whose challenges in this arena are a familiar part of their political tale. In addition, however, there remain astounding hidden dimensions involving the skills of "spy craft" acquired in a lifetime of covert intelligence activities by George H.W. ("Poppy") Bush and many of his closest associates.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

JFK and Bay of Pigs: Poppy Bush was deeply involved with an array of CIA covert operators, Bay of Pigs veterans and right-wing Texas oil industry characters linked to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Baker shows that Bush was actually in Dallas on November 21, 1963, and was probably there on the day of the assassination as well. Baker draws no particular conclusions from the fact, except to document, describe, and underscore the great lengths he took to conceal it.

There are several other secrets worth looking into, including Poppy's relationship with the Saudi Royal Family.

Investigative works are often labeled “conspiracy theories.” This term is generally used to suggest that whatever an author has learned, he or she may be a bit unhinged, and we may therefore not take the material seriously. And we are safe to go about our business as usual. While there are people and work, no matter how well intentioned to which the label might fairly apply, the label is also used by many of us to dismiss information and analyses that make us uncomfortable even when they legitimately push the boundaries of our understanding of modern politics, business and government.

Just from what I have read and I have been clicking on the other sites that continues or explains other parts of this book. If anyone is interested in the question "how did we get to this part in our history" then this book should add more questions.

Baker is a well-respected journalist who has written for major newspapers and magazines and has served as a contributing editor of the Columbia Journalism Review. His effort to understand the lives of the presidents Bush unexpectedly led him to reexamine Watergate and the Kennedy assassination and other murky episodes of recent American history, “documenting the secrets that the House of Bush has long sought to obscure.”

This is not some person that just wanted to write a best seller whether or not it was true. His investigative research has raised some interesting information and also questions the comment made by Wead.

“I’m still amazed,” Doug Wead, a key architect of the Bush family’s evangelical outreach strategy told Baker, “how naïve so many journalists are who have covered politics all of their life.”

Where were our journalists? It seems everyone was just "charmed" by the Bush family that any serious investigation was not done. Just think, if it had (investigated) we may not have had the 2nd term, we may not be in the position we are in now.

Add this to my reading list.

The whole CIA connection made me uncomfortable. Then toward the end of his first term it came out that Poppy had been on Halcyon which may cause hallucinations. These convenient or socially acceptable conversions are also problematic.

It's not that I have any high-ranking political connections, it's not that I have insider information, it's not that I am especially observant or smart or prescient - it's that the facts are all mostly right in front of us and always have been, if one is good at putting together puzzles, if anyone bothered to take the time to see these things, digest them, begin to understand them, and finally, to believe the reality of them. The Bush family, and related persons, are the modern day mob.

They have done more to destroy this country and its founding principles than any other nefarious characters throughout our history - and nobody really seems to care. It's like people see the bogeyman, but want to pretend it's not real. When others speak up, when they bring evidence that cannot be refuted - we bury our heads in the sand, with our fingers in our ears, singing "lalalalalalala" so that we don't hear things we don't want to hear.

It's hard to be heard in this day and age unless you have money, ties to big media, or political cache. And those that do, are most often actually the "keepers of the secrets" - for personal gain. Conspiracy theorists have been slowly but surely ostracized and played as paranoid fools throughout history, because sometimes, the truth is just too scary and painful to contemplate.

One other point, if I may. The religious aspect of this plays a huge part, in my mind.

People who are bound by religion have agreed to have "faith" in that which has no basis in reality. IMHO, this plays a big part in how those in power work together to manipulate others to their own ends - for if one can be indoctrinated to believe in that which has no basis in reality, one can be led to believe anything. If one can be manipulated into leading one's life according to the rules of another, one can be manipulated into other things, as well.

A healthy skepticism for the motives and goals of those who would gain power over others is an absolute necessity for any right-thinking human being, but religion requires suspension of logic, suspension of doubt, suspension of belief in reality. This allows others to then lead the "faithful" in any direction they so choose.

pjwrites, in light of both statements I'd like to add a couple more cases of suspension of disbelief. First theater demands suspension of disbelief. To enjoy a play or movie we must ignore the "star" or "story" and let ourselves get caught up spectacle. e.g. Leonard di Capprio is not a Venetian noble, albeit a young one.
The other is more pernicious. It is our willingness, when we watch the news, to be channeled into relatively unimportant coverage (gossip, humor, threat, disaster) rather than the real news it easier not to deal with. e.g. Who is going to design Michelle's ball gown? Rather than why are we selling dangerous weaponry to Israel and supporting the war in Gaza?

Excellent point. The brainwashing of the populace continues, as we're subtly led to those things we should be concerning ourselves with . . . pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Good point jade

We are more willing to watch what the latest "idol' winner is doing then demand better news, more in depth news that really affects us.

I hope that even MSNBC and FOX will be encouraged by their audiences to be more responsible and less silly.
